Nuclear Niño response observed in simulations of nuclear war scenarios

چکیده

Abstract The climate impacts of smoke from fires ignited by nuclear war would include global cooling and crop failure. Facing increased reliance on ocean-based food sources, it is critical to understand the physical biological state post-war oceans. Here we use an Earth system model simulate six scenarios. We show that can generate a large, sustained response in equatorial Pacific, resembling El Niño but persisting for up seven years. following war, or Nuclear Niño, be characterized westerly trade wind anomalies shutdown Pacific upwelling, caused primarily Maritime Continent tropical Africa. Reduced incident sunlight ocean circulation changes cause 40% reduction phytoplankton productivity. These results indicate could trigger extreme change compromise security beyond

Environmental consequences of nuclear war

groups made valuable contributions to elaborating the consequences of nuclear warfare.1 Paul Crutzen and John Birks proposed that massive fires and smoke emissions in the lower atmosphere after a global nuclear exchange would create severe short-term environmental aftereffects. Extending their work, two of us (Toon and Turco) and colleagues discovered “nuclear winter,” which posited that worldw...

I-12: Nuclear Reprogramming in Bovin Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer

Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT or cloning) returns a differentiated cell to a totipotent status; a process termed nuclear reprogramming. Reproductive cloning has potential applications in both agriculture and biomedicine, but is limited by low efficiency. To understand the deficiencies of nuclear reprogramming, our research has focused on both candidate genes and global gene expression pat...

Nuclear lattice simulations

We summarize recent progress on nuclear lattice simulations using chiral effective field theory. We present lattice results for dilute neutron matter at next-to-leading order and three-body forces in light nuclei at next-to-next-to-leading order.
